Family: Oystercatchers
A stocky black-and-white wader with a long orange-red bill, pink legs and a red eye. Oystercatchers are loud and conspicuous on the coast, prising open mussels and cockles or hammering them apart on the shore. In Germany they breed along the North Sea coast and increasingly inland along the rivers of the north, and most stay through the winter on the mudflats.
