A familiar jay about 30 centimetres long, blue above with a black necklace, white underparts and a prominent crest. It is a bold, adaptable bird of woodland, parks and gardens, feeding on acorns, seeds, insects and occasionally eggs, and caching food for winter. It is resident and partly migratory across eastern North America, not occurring in Germany.
