Robin-shaped and robin-sized, the male carries a blue throat with a white or red centre above a black and rust band, and both sexes flash rusty tail sides when they flick away. Reeds, ditches and willow scrub in wet ground hold it; the song is varied and mimetic, often given from a low stem. In Germany it breeds in wet lowlands and river valleys, and leaves for Africa in autumn.
