Common shelduckBrandgans Tadorna tadorna
Family: Ducks, geese, and waterfowl
A goose-sized duck with a striking pattern: white body, dark green head, red bill and a broad chestnut band around the chest. Shelducks feed on the mudflats of the Wadden Sea, sifting for tiny snails, and nest in rabbit burrows and under sheds. Almost the entire north-west European population gathers in the German Wadden Sea in late summer to moult.
