Common chaffinchBuchfink Fringilla coelebs
Family: Finches and allies
One of Germany's commonest birds: the male has a slate-blue crown, pink cheeks and breast and two bold white wing bars, the female is olive-brown with the same wing pattern. Chaffinches sing a rattling phrase ending in a flourish from every wood and garden in spring. Resident all year, joined in winter by large numbers from Scandinavia.
