A pale gull the size of a black-headed gull, told by its long sloping forehead and long slim bill, with a white head all year and often a pink flush on the underparts in spring. It feeds in shallow lagoons, salt pans and deltas, picking from the surface in loose flocks. It breeds around the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and east to India, and reaches Germany only as a rare visitor.
