Family: Crows, jays, and magpies
Pinkish-brown and jackdaw-sized, with a black moustache, a white rump that flashes against the dark tail in flight and a chequered blue panel on the wing. In autumn it carries acorns in its throat to bury them singly across the wood, and its harsh screech usually announces it long before the bird appears. It breeds and stays throughout Germany, joined in some autumns by flocks moving west.
