European greenfinchGrünfink Chloris chloris
Family: Finches and allies
Stocky and about house-sparrow size, it is olive-green with yellow flashes along the wing and at the sides of the tail, the female duller and more streaked. Gardens, hedges and churchyard conifers suit it, and in spring the male sings a wheezing note between canary-like trills, sometimes in slow circling display flight. It breeds across Germany, where most stay all year and are joined by winter visitors.
