A tall, pale grey wader with long green legs and a slightly upturned bill; the call is a ringing three-note whistle. Greenshanks chase small fish through shallow water and often feed alone or in small groups on the edges of lakes and mudflats. They breed in northern Scandinavia and pass through Germany in spring and from July to October.
