A large green woodpecker with a yellow rump, a red crown and a black face mask; the male has a red centre in his moustache stripe. Green woodpeckers spend much of their time on the ground digging for ants and are more often heard than seen, a loud laughing call ringing across parks and orchards. Resident throughout Germany, though absent from dense conifer forest.
