The large white swan of park lakes and rivers, with an orange bill topped by a black knob that is larger in males. Mute swans hold their necks in an S-curve, raise their wings like sails when threatened and are silent apart from hisses and grunts, though their wingbeats make a loud throbbing sound in flight. Resident throughout Germany on any calm water.
