Long-tailed and chicken-sized, the cock is copper and bronze with a green head, red face wattles and usually a white neck ring; the hen is mottled buff with a shorter tail. Hedges, reedbeds and field edges hold it, and a disturbed bird explodes upwards with a hoarse crow before gliding away on stiff wings. Introduced to Germany for shooting, it now breeds and lives here all year.
