Grey ploverKiebitzregenpfeifer Pluvialis squatarola
Family: Plovers and lapwings
Bulkier than a golden plover, with a heavy bill and a habit of standing still, the grey plover is silver-speckled in winter and black-faced below in summer; black armpits show in flight. Muddy tidal flats are its ground, where single birds feed well apart, running and pausing to pick worms. In Germany it passes through along the Wadden Sea between the Arctic and Africa.
