Family: Woodpeckers
A small woodpecker with a finely barred back and a limited red patch on the male's nape, familiar in gardens and woodland across its range. It forages through forest, parks and gardens, tapping quietly at bark for insects. It is found across Japan and neighbouring parts of East Asia, where it remains common.
