European shagKrähenscharbe Phalacrocorax aristotelis
Family: Cormorants and shags
A slender, all-dark cormorant, smaller than the great cormorant, with a thinner neck and bill, a steep forehead and, in spring, a short upturned crest and a green sheen to the plumage. Shags are strictly coastal, diving for fish in clear water off rocky shores. They breed on cliffs in western and northern Europe and are only occasional visitors to Germany, mostly on Helgoland.
