Mandarin duckMandarinente Aix galericulata
Family: Ducks, geese, and waterfowl
A small, ornate duck from East Asia; the drake carries orange side-whiskers, a red bill and a pair of raised orange sails on the back, the female is soft grey with a white spectacle around the eye. Mandarins favour wooded lakes and slow rivers and nest in tree holes high above the water. Escaped birds have founded small feral populations in Germany, for example in Berlin's parks.
