Tufted duckReiherente Aythya fuligula
Family: Ducks, geese, and waterfowl
A small diving duck, smaller than a mallard: the drake is black with clean white flanks and a drooping crest, the female dark brown with a shorter tuft, and both have a yellow eye. It dives for mussels and insects on open lakes, reservoirs and gravel pits, often in tight flocks. In Germany it breeds widely and is a common winter visitor wherever water stays ice-free.
