Common goldeneyeSchellente Bucephala clangula
Family: Ducks, geese, and waterfowl
A compact diving duck with a large head: the drake is black and white with a round white spot before a golden eye, the female grey with a chocolate-brown head. Its wings whistle in flight, and it dives almost continuously for insects and molluscs. It nests in tree holes and boxes, breeds thinly in north-eastern Germany, and winters in numbers on lakes, rivers and the coast.
