Glossy ibisSichler Plegadis falcinellus

Family: Ibises, Spoonbills

A dark, slender wading bird the size of a small heron, with a long down-curved bill; from a distance it looks black, but in sunlight the plumage glows chestnut, bronze and green. Glossy ibises feed in groups in flooded fields and marshes, probing for insects and small animals. They breed in southern Europe and are turning up in Germany more often as the range expands northwards.
