Large and familiar, pale grey above with black wingtips marked by white spots, a yellow bill carrying a red spot, pink legs and a hard pale eye. Colonies nest on dunes, islands and on flat roofs in coastal towns, and birds follow fishing boats and work the tideline. It breeds along both German coasts, stays through the year and is joined in winter by birds from the north.
