Whooper swanSingschwan Cygnus cygnus
Family: Ducks, geese, and waterfowl
As large as a mute swan but straighter in the neck, the bill black at the tip with a wedge of yellow that narrows to a point beyond the nostril. Pairs and families use shallow lakes, rivers and flooded fields, and their bugling calls carry across open country. In Germany it is a rare breeder in the north-east, and a common migrant and winter visitor.
