Eurasian sparrowhawkSperber Accipiter nisus
Family: Hawks, eagles, and kites
A small, short-winged hawk with a long square-ended tail and yellow eyes; the male is little bigger than a blackbird with rusty barring below, the female much larger and grey-brown. It hunts small birds by surprise, hugging hedges and garden fences in a fast burst of flaps and glides. In Germany it breeds widely, stays all year, and is joined on passage and in winter by birds from the north.
