Long-legged and upright, a little larger than a robin: the spring male is blue-grey above with a black mask, and every plumage shows the white rump and black tail band forming a bold T in flight. Bare stony ground, dunes and short turf suit it, where it runs, bobs and flits from stone to stone. It breeds at scattered German sites and passes through on its way to Africa.
