MallardStockente Anas platyrhynchos
Family: Ducks, geese, and waterfowl
The familiar large duck of every park pond: the drake has a bottle-green head, white neck ring and chestnut breast, the female is mottled brown with an orange bill and a blue wing panel that both sexes show in flight. Mallards dabble and up-end in shallow water, graze on banks and nest almost anywhere, from reed beds to balconies. Common all year throughout Germany, with numbers swelling in winter.
