Black-tailed godwitUferschnepfe Limosa limosa
Family: Sandpipers and allies
A tall, long-legged wader with a long, almost straight bill; in spring the head and breast turn orange-brown and the flight shows a black tail with a broad white bar across the wing. Black-tailed godwits breed in wet meadows and feed by probing deep into soft mud. Once widespread on German lowland grassland, the species has declined sharply and is now a red-list breeding bird.
