Tiny beside any other tern, barely longer than a starling, with a yellow black-tipped bill, orange legs and a white forehead that cuts into the black cap. Flight is quick and whirring, and birds hover over shallow water before dropping in with a small splash. Colonies nest on bare sand and shingle along the German coast, and the birds winter off West Africa.
