A small, compact bustard with sandy brown, finely marked upperparts and, in the male, a black-and-white banded neck shown in display. It lives in open steppe and farmland, feeding on insects, seeds and green shoots, and is wary, often crouching low rather than flying. Once breeding as far north as Germany, it now survives only in scattered, declining populations further south and west in Europe.
